While we do make responsible savings decisions in our daily lives, we recognize that there are important
exceptions to our savings rules.
Last Saturday, my little sister, Jea, and I participated in the Grilled Cheese Invitational – the most epic,
cheese-tastic cook-off in Los Angeles! About 200 teams come as far as New York and Boston to compete in the GCI year after year and it is so much fun!
But just how much did joining the Grilled Cheese Invitational cost us?
$30 – registration fee
$80 – grocery shopping for grilled cheese ingredients
$35 – 2 tickets for the event for the hubs and our middle sister, Aylene (aka our awesome cheerleaders)
$40 – costumes (chef’s hats and aprons – thanks for our cute outfits, Aylene!)
$50 – food from vendors/food trucks
$10 – souvenir t-shirt
As it turned out, we spent nearly $250 between the 4 of us. That’s certainly a lot of money to spend for one day! If we only looked at the bottom line, we probably wouldn’t have joined the Grilled Cheese Invitational from the get go.
And that would have been a silly, short-sighted financial decision.
Joining the Grilled Cheese Invitational gave my sister and I a chance to bond over our shared love of cooking.
I remember when she was little and she needed to pull a chair next to the stove to see me cook. Slowly, I
taught her how to cook eggs, ramen, pancakes, pasta, fried rice - you name it! As the years went on, she was teaching ME how to cook! She’s schooled me on baking pies and making the perfect chocolate chip
cookies – all before she turned 13! When I found out about the Grilled Cheese Invitational, I didn’t exactly
have to twist her arm to sign up with me.
And guess what? WE WON! Jea’s Strawberry Brie-zie recipe not only won one of the Judges’ Awards but
came in 3rd place in the Honey-Pot (Dessert) category! Wooo hoo! (And this is us in the LA Weekly feature! We're famous! LoL!)
Whether we won or not, I still would have thought all the money we spent was worth it and then some.
Family is the most important thing in our lives. If we couldn’t look past how much everything cost, we would have missed out on all the fun memories we created in the process. When we’re old and gray, I guarantee we would still be talking about how awesome it was to have competed in the Grilled Cheese Invitational. We would look back at how surprised we were when they called our names to the stage and how we all were jumping up and down with excitement (including my husband!) We would laugh at taking home 3 Breville Grilled Cheese makers as prizes - and how silly Carlos must have looked carrying it all back to the car. And, despite how tired we all were, we would remember how much love and happiness we felt the entire day. When all is said and done, I think it was money very well spent!
