As a self-professed bathing suit hoarder, I was finally able to let go of some of my staple suits - really, it was time to. All told I donated about 4 different pairs. Since I was feeling pretty darn good about getting rid of some clutter, I was excited to go shopping for a new bikini in time for our summer travel plans. (Hello, Cabo! Hello, Maui!)
Ok, I shouldn't have looked, (what was I thinking!?! LoL!) but my first stop was Bloomingdales.com. Needless to say, I was floored with sticker shock! Really, a good bikini costs how much?!?!?
I absolutely fell in love with the cutest Mara Hoffman bikini. It has an adorable bustier top and a happy aqua-colored geometrical print. If I had to pick a perfect suit to lounge around in Mexico and Hawaii this summer, this would be it! The problem was, the bikini top alone was already $132.00! Add to that the equally expensive bikini bottom at $102.00 and the whole suit costs over $234.00! If you factor in the taxes and shipping costs, it's pretty much $265 out the door. Yikes! Since that alone is above my entire shopping budget for the year, I knew I had to find an alternative.
After browsing through all the usual suspects (Macy's, Nordies, Victoria's Secret, Amazon, Zappos, AND J.Crew) I was beginning to think that I wasn't going to find a decent suit anywhere that's within my budget. (Note: You might be wondering why I haven't looked at Target and H&M or other low-cost retailers but I've had bad experiences with the quality of suits that I've purchased there before. Therefore, while the price is attractive, I can't really speak of the quality of their suits - so I'll refrain from recommending that you go that route. But I digress!)
Finally, I stumbled into a schnazzy little website - 6pm.com. Browsing through the inventory, it looks as though this is where items from both Zappos and Amazon eventually make it's way AFTER it gets marked down for clearance sales. Interestingly enough, though, some items are still for sale at Zappos and Amazon for at least double it's selling price at 6pm.com! Granted, I'm not really sure where they get their inventory from but I am very excited to find this little gem online. (I can already see Carlos rolling his eyes LoL!)
Obviously, I knew I wasn't going to find the same suit that I was crushing on at Bloomies. But to be perfectly honest, there are so many designers and suits to choose from, I quickly forgot my inspiration suit and dove right into finding the cutest, cheapest bikini I could find! After much deliberation (and to be fair, they didn't always carry my size!) I finally decided on the "Tatsuyama" Nannette Lepore top and the Athena Navy bottoms. A quick search in Amazon showed that the same top was retailing for $88 and the Navy bottoms were retailing for $45. But how much did I pay for these altogether? I paid a very respectable $35.96, including taxes AND shipping (This price is with the 10% discount code I found online)! That's over an 86% savings compared to what I would have paid if I decided to buy the suit at Bloomingdales! Holy bargain-shopping, Batman!
